Ilearn to singF YOU CAN TALK, YOU CAN SING!

We are all born to sing — I believe this with all my heart. People all over the world have sung for as long as there has been language – in fact only relatively recently, with the advent of musical recording, has the birthright of song been relinquished to the professionals.

Do you have a story? Perhaps there’s a reason why you’re afraid to sing. Many people who think they can’t sing have had some kind of experience that shut them down (for example, a criticism at an early age, a sense that someone else was the “the singer” in the family, an insensitive music teacher!) and this negative experience has gelled into a myth that they have come to see as a truth. Does this sound familiar to you?

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

We’ll start by opening up our idea of what singing is. Let’s play with sound, and what it’s like to simply make noise together. Let’s talk about what singing means to you and why, and what kind of music interests you. We’ll play games with singing and rhythm, do some toning and rounds as a way of exploring harmony, move and stretch our bodies as we explore making different sounds, and sing simple, accessible songs from different cultures. Finding your voice is both fun and profound!

If you want to learn to sing, email me and we’ll choose your first right step!

With life-long certainty I told Nancy I was tone-deaf and within two minutes she had me matching a note she was singing. I was amazed and a little bit giddy!

Thank you so much for the singing lesson. It was something I will never forget and until recently I would never have done that. It’s all about growing. You are doing such great things for others with your gift. Thank you for sharing.

I knew nothing about singing but I have found that I can do this. It feels so good to sing with other humans.

ARTICLES FROM MY BLOG…

I was an art major in college…

HELLO FRIENDS... ❤️ I have a story for you... I was an art major in college. I focussed mostly on sculpture and printmaking, and got plenty of good support from my professors. Then I took a painting class with Professor Neuman — he had a dry sense of humor and some prestige in the art world — we thought he was quirky but we admired him — a lot. Too much, I think now. His regular critique of my painting was that I had “Shape-itis” (like it was a disease!), meaning I tended towards making closed shapes and wasn’t working “painterly” enough. “Break up those shapes!” It felt like he was saying that what I gravitated towards had no value. After that I seemed to doubt myself all the time. Why did one [...]

Word of the Year (2024)

The Word of the Year has become my favorite New Year's ritual. I wrote the article below 11(!) years ago when it was still a relatively new discovery for me. You'll feel my enthusiasm around this practice of choosing a single word to embody the just right energy for moving into the future you desire. The whole process is fun and inspiring, and results in a surprisingly deep and loving dive into your heart and soul. Highly recommend...! Here's How. It's simple (but deep)... What word would you like to be your guiding principle for the coming year? Think about the past year. Where have you felt stuck? What do you want more of? What parts of yourself would you like to grow into and expand? What would you like to leave [...]
